The USS Farragut (ex-DLG-6/DDG-37), was named after Admiral David G. Farragut (1801-1870), a national hero from his Union victory at Mobile Bay, Alabama in 1864 and who was honored as the first Admiral in the US Navy. The frigate DLG-6 was built by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Quincy, Massachusetts as a Farragut-class guided missile destroyer. Launched on 15 July 1958 and commissioned on 10 December 1960, Farragut was the fourth ship in the Navy to bear the name. On 30 June 1975 Farragut was reclassified as a guided missile destroyer and designated DDG-37. Farragut took part in various contingency operations in the Atlantic and Mediterranean, earning the Navy Unit Commendation. Farragut's motto was "Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead!" On 24 October 1975 Farragut ran aground while departing Den Helder, Netherlands for Brest, France and damaged both sonar domes. Farragut was decommissioned on 31 October 1989 and sold as scrap on 16 December 1994.
