The USS John Hancock (ex-DD-981), was the sixth U.S. Navy ship to be named after the first signer of the Declaration of Independence, President of the Continental Congress and Chairman of the Marine Committee - John Hancock. The 19th ship in the Spruance-class, the USS John Hancock was designed and built by Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi and keel was laid on 16 January 1976, launched on 29 October 1977 and commissioned on 10 March 1979. In 1983 the USS John Hancock underwent a conversion and overhaul. After a shakedown cruise in 1984 to Guantomino Bay, Cuba, she was later transferred to Mayport, Florida. In 1988 she was deployed in Operation Earnest Will and provided support in the Persian Gulf for the next nine months. In 1994 USS John Hancock was deployed in the Red Sea conducting multinational maritime interception operations (MIO) to enforce UN sanctions against Iraq, intercepting the 20,000th ship since sanctions were put into place in August 1990. In 1995 the USS John Hancock was reassigned to Destroyer Squadron 24 and performed hurricane relief in the Atlantic off the SE coast of Florida. In 1996 she was selected to perform test platforms for the P2 afloat program, and in 1997 performed surveillance, rescue, humanitarian assistance, maritime interdiction, embassy support and non-combatant evacuation operations in the Mediterranean Sea, Adriatic Sea, Red Sea and Persian Gulf..
