The USS Sterett (ex-DLG/CG-31), was named after Andrew Sterett, Barbary War hero and commander of the USS Enterprise. The frigate DLG-31 was built by the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a guided missile destroyer leader. Keel was laid 25 Sept 1962, launched 30 June 1964 and commissioned on 8 April 1967. From 1968 to 1970 Sterett was homeported in Yokosuka, Japan. Sterett served as an air traffic control ship, rescuing downed aviators off the coast of North Vietnam throughout the Vietnam War. On 19 April 1972, Sterett engaged multiple enemy MiG aircraft and missile patrol boats off the coast of North Vietnam. Sterett received the Naval Unit Citation and Combat Action Ribbon for being the first ship in Naval history to down an attacking jet aircraft with a Terrier missile, and the first to ever engage an enemy missile with a missile. In 1972 Sterett was blockade ship during the mining of Haiphong Harbor. On 1 July 1975 Sterett was redesignated as Guided Missile Cruiser CG-31. From 1981 to 1991 Sterett was homeported in the Philippines, serving as a flagship and received the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. In 1982 and 1983 Sterett received three humanitarian awards for rescuing 239 Vietnamese refuges stranded at sea. In 1983 Sterett was flagship for the salvage/search operations following the downing of Korean Air flight KAL-007, receiving the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. In 1987 and 1988 Sterett protected oil tankers in the Arabian Sea. In 1993 Sterett supported “Operation Support Democracy” off the coast of Haiti and performed counter-drug operations in the Caribbean. Sterett was decommissioned 24 March 1994 and sold as scrap on 31 July 2005. The USS Sterett Association
