An optical illusion is a way your brain can trick your eyes into seeing something that isn’t there. Try this experiment to see if your eyes can be fooled.

Materials Needed:

Directions:

• Place a coin in the center of the bottom of a drinking glass.
• Add about an inch of water, making sure your coin stays put.
• Look at the glass from an angle just above the water level. When you’re looking at it form the right angle, you will see two coins instead of one – one will look like it’s floating on top of the water and the coin on the bottom will look bigger than it is!

How does this work?

When light rays reflect through water, they bend, making you see the “floating” coin. Also, the curve of the drinking glass acts like a magnifying glass, making your coin look bigger.
