BLACKBERRY PATENT DISPUTE SETTLED BlackBerry maker Research In Motion settled its dispute with the patent holding company NTP for a reported $612.5 million. The settlement brings to a close the long-running patent dispute that threatened to shut down wireless e-mail service for RIMs 3.2 million users. The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) issued patent number 7 million on Tuesday, February 14th to a senior researcher at DuPont for "polysaccharide fibers" and a process for their production. The patent was issued to John P. O'Brien, who developed the "cotton-like" fibers by converting sugar and water into a polysaccharide using an industrial biotechnology process. Polysaccharide fibers are derived from biologically based resources, are biodegradable, and are suitable for use in textiles. |
