U.S. ISSUES PATENT        NO. 7 MILLION
February 20, 2006

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) issued patent number 7 million on Tuesday, February 14th to a senior researcher at DuPont for "polysaccharide fibers" and a process for their production.  The patent was issued to John P. O'Brien, who developed the "cotton-like" fibers by converting sugar and water into a polysaccharide using an industrial biotechnology process.  Polysaccharide fibers are derived from biologically based resources, are biodegradable, and are suitable for use in textiles.

The patent was marked as number 7 million, though the U.S. did not begin numbering patents until 1836, when patent number 1 was issued.  The very first U.S. patent was issued to Samuel Hopkins in 1790 for an improvement in the "making Pot ash and Pearl ash by a new Apparatus and Process," and was signed by President George Washington.

For more information on the polysaccharide patent, please see DuPont's press release.
